Ron Smith's Bio


Ron Smith is professor emeritus of public communication at SUNY Buffalo State. He has taught public relations research, strategy, and writing. He is project director for the department's American Indian Policy and Media Initiative.


In his 27 years at Buffalo State, Ron has served as chair of the Communication Department and interim associate dean of the School of Arts and Humanities.


Prior to his teaching career, Ron served as communications director with the Catholic Diocese of Syracuse, working public relations and television production. He has worked as a public relations manager and consultant, crisis communication trainer, newspaper editor, and Navy journalist (working on an aircraft carrier off Vietnam before being honorably discharged as a conscientious objector). He also is a reviewer with the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.


Ron has written four textbooks used by 438 colleges and universities throughout North America and acquired by more than 2,900 academic libraries around the world: Public Relations: The Basics (2014); Strategic Planning for Public Relations (2017 5th edition); Becoming a Public Relations Writer (2017 5th edition; and (as co-author) MediaWriting (4th edition), as well as Introduction to Language and Communication for the United Arab Emirates University.


He has conducted media analyses on news coverage of Native issues and co-edited Shoot the Indian: Media, Misperception and Native Truth (2007). He also is a contributing editor in the Sage 21st Century Reference Series: Communication and has published in the Journal of Public Relations Research. He is a member of the editorial board of the Romanian Journal of Marketing.


Ron is an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America and has served as chapter president and district chair. For 20 years he headed the chapter's APR readiness program. He has been named “Practitioner of the Year” by the Buffalo-Niagara PRSA chapter, received the chapter board’s “Service Medal” and several Excalibur awards, and twice was nominated as “Public Relations Educator of the Year” by PRSA nationally.
