Smith Communication Counsel

Ron Smith is a consultant offering a variety of services, drawing on his 20 years of professional work in journalism and public relations and 27 years of academic experience and writing. He also gives numerous presentations and workshops. He works with clients both as a solo consultant and through Smith Communication Counsel, his DBA established in 1993 for those clients that wish to work with a corporate consultant rather than an individual.


Strategic Planning: Assistance in analyzing strategic communication needs and evaluating their progress in public relations, marketing communications, and related areas of business and organizational life.


Media & Interview Training: Tips on preparing for media interviews, public presentations and other situations., including two booklets written by Ron, "Reputation" and "Credibility," that serve as the basis of half-day or full-day hands-on practice in Q&A engagements (United Way, Buffalo State).


Research: Various types of applied strategic research for clients:

  • Focus Groups for  marketing, fundraising, public relations, and related purposes to help organizations engage representative groups in a discussion of issues (Niagara County Community College).

  • Readability analsis for legal cases with attorney (Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr).

  • Content Analysis with research and anlysis of content of publications and media for advocacy groups (Santa Ynez Chumash Indians).

  • Surveys, including design, implementation and evaluation of a survey project, as well as assistance in preparing questionnaires for internal surveys (National Museum of the American Indian, Buffalo Hearing & Speech Assn).


Organizational Communication: Evaluation, training and structuring for efficient and effective communication within an organization, both internally (with employees, members, volunteers and other constituents) and externally (with media, consumers, regulators, legislators and other stakeholders). Clients have included: 

  • National organizatoins (Ford/UAW, Smithsonian Institution, US Air Force, Catholic Education Association)

  • Regional organizations (WNY Episcopal Diocese, Japan Culture Council, Catholic Diocese of Syracuse)
